Opening Thoughts, Winter Messenger 2020

New is in the air around NNU. Of course the obvious is the new year with all the promise it brings. Accompanying the promise of the new year are those promises many of us make regarding things we’re going to accomplish, new habits we’re going to establish, and, in some cases, habits we’re going to break or replace. The new year seems to be a magical milestone.

The new year also brings a new semester which includes new students joining the NNU family. Those students join us online and on-campus and become part of our growing, global community. They bring new life and new possibilities to all NNU is becoming, and, in turn, NNU brings new life and new possibilities to each of them.

As this new year begins, we now fully occupy the Howard and Mary Conrad Student Commons. Central to this building is a new dining experience offering new food options, new tables, booths and counters to gather around, and new vistas to enjoy out the expansive, south-facing windows. Throughout the building are new spaces to meet, study, socialize, worship, work, learn and play. This new building presents a myriad of new opportunities for our growing community.

As we occupy a new building, we also consider new uses for an existing building. On the drawing board are plans to repurpose our former Student Center into a new College of Nursing, allowing our already growing nursing programs to expand even further. This newly imagined space will also include a centralized student services experience providing our on-campus students with a single location to manage the “business” of being a Student.

So much of who we are, both old and new, is because of the partnerships formed throughout our more than 100-year history. It’s partnerships that help connect us to new students and open the door to new possibilities. It’s partnerships that help build new buildings and repurpose others. It’s partnerships that help us expand our College of Nursing to prepare tomorrow’s healthcare workers. And in this new year, new partnerships will be formed and new possibilities explored.

New year …

New possibilities …

New partnerships …
